How Fuel Cost Is Calculated

The formula is straightforward: Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ MPG) × Price per Gallon. First, divide the distance by your vehicle's fuel efficiency to get gallons needed. Then multiply by the current gas price.

For metric units, use km/L or L/100km. At 8L/100km and $1.50/L, a 500 km trip costs $60.

Tips to Reduce Fuel Costs

Maintain proper tire pressure (under-inflated tires reduce MPG by up to 3%). Drive at steady speeds — highway fuel economy peaks at 50-60 mph for most vehicles. Remove unnecessary weight; every 100 lbs reduces MPG by ~1-2%. Use cruise control on highways. Accelerate and brake smoothly.

Electric Vehicle Equivalent

EVs use kWh per mile instead of gallons. At $0.13/kWh and 3.5 miles/kWh efficiency, the cost per mile is about $0.037 — roughly 3-5× cheaper than a 30 MPG gas car at $3.50/gallon ($0.117/mile). Use this calculator to compare ICE vs EV trip costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my car's MPG?

Check your car's manual, the EPA FuelEconomy.gov database, or your vehicle's trip computer. You can also calculate it manually: fill your tank, drive until nearly empty, fill again and record gallons added, then divide miles driven by gallons used.

What affects fuel efficiency most?

Speed is the biggest factor — aerodynamic drag increases with the square of velocity. Air conditioning can reduce MPG by 5-25%. Cold weather thickens oil and increases rolling resistance. Highway driving is generally more efficient than city stop-and-go traffic.

How do I convert L/100km to MPG?

Use the formula: MPG = 235.214 ÷ (L/100km). For example, 7 L/100km = 33.6 MPG. To convert MPG to L/100km: L/100km = 235.214 ÷ MPG.
