What is an Aspect Ratio?

An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between width and height, expressed as W:H. Common aspect ratios include 16:9 (widescreen HD video and most monitors), 4:3 (older TVs and photos), 1:1 (square, Instagram posts), and 21:9 (ultrawide cinema).

This calculator reduces any width × height pair to its simplest ratio using the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). It also calculates the new height when you scale to a different width.

일반적인 종횡비

RatioCommon Use
16:9HD video, YouTube, most monitors
4:3Traditional TV, classic photography
1:1Instagram square, profile photos
21:9Ultrawide cinema, gaming monitors
9:16Mobile video (TikTok, Reels)
3:235mm film, DSLR photos
2:1Panoramic photography

How to Resize While Maintaining Aspect Ratio

To resize an image while keeping its aspect ratio, fix one dimension and scale the other proportionally:

For example, to resize a 1920×1080 image to 1280 width: New Height = (1080 × 1280) / 1920 = 720. So 1280×720 is the correct 16:9 size.

자주 묻는 질문

What aspect ratio is 1920x1080?

1920×1080 has an aspect ratio of 16:9. This is the standard widescreen format used for HD video, YouTube, most computer monitors, and modern TVs. 3840×2160 (4K) is also 16:9.

How do I find the aspect ratio of an image?

Enter the image's width and height into the calculator. It will compute the simplified ratio. Alternatively, divide width by height to get the decimal ratio. 16:9 = 1.778, 4:3 = 1.333, 1:1 = 1.0.

What is the difference between aspect ratio and resolution?

Resolution is the total number of pixels (e.g., 1920×1080 = 2,073,600 pixels). Aspect ratio is the proportion (16:9). Two images can share the same aspect ratio but have different resolutions: both 1280×720 and 1920×1080 are 16:9.
