How Blood Alcohol Content is Calculated

Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) measures the percentage of alcohol in your bloodstream. The Widmark formula estimates BAC: BAC = (grams of alcohol / (body weight × distribution ratio)) − (metabolism rate × hours).

The distribution ratio (r) is 0.68 for males and 0.55 for females, reflecting differences in body water content. Alcohol is metabolized at roughly 0.015% BAC per hour on average.

This calculator provides an estimate only. Actual BAC varies with food intake, hydration, medications, and individual metabolism.

BAC Levels and Their Effects

Factors That Affect BAC

Several factors influence how your body processes alcohol:

Frequently Asked Questions

How long until BAC reaches zero?

BAC drops at approximately 0.015% per hour. A BAC of 0.08% would take about 5–6 hours to clear. Coffee, water, or food do not speed up this process — only time does.

What counts as one standard drink?

One standard drink contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol: 12 oz of regular beer (5% ABV), 5 oz of wine (12% ABV), or 1.5 oz of distilled spirits (40% ABV).

Is this calculator accurate enough to determine if I can drive?

No BAC calculator should be used to decide whether to drive. Individual metabolism, tolerance, and other factors mean actual BAC can differ significantly from estimates. If you have consumed alcohol, the safest choice is not to drive.
