Use a pool depth pole or tape measure at the shallow and deep ends. Lower a weight on a string to measure depth, or check your original pool blueprint for specifications. You can also measure the time to fill the pool from a known flow rate.

Volume is determined solely by shape and dimensions, regardless of whether a pool is above-ground or in-ground. Above-ground pools are typically round (12-24 ft diameter, 4 ft deep) or oval, making volume straightforward: pi x r^2 x depth. In-ground pools often have irregular shapes (L-shape, kidney) requiring decomposition into rectangles and circles. Common volumes: 12-ft round, 4 ft deep = 3,400 gallons (12,870 L); 15x30 ft rectangular, 5 ft deep = 14,000 gallons (52,996 L).

At average US water rates (~$0.004 per gallon), filling a 20,000-gallon pool costs approximately $80. Some municipalities charge more for high-volume usage. Check if your utility offers a one-time fill exemption from sewer charges (since filled water doesn't go through the sewer).
