What Is Molar Mass?

Molar mass is the mass of one mole (6.022 × 10²³ particles) of a substance, expressed in grams per mole (g/mol). It equals the sum of the atomic masses of all atoms in one molecule of the compound.

For example, water (H₂O) has a molar mass of 2 × 1.008 + 15.999 = 18.015 g/mol. This means 18.015 grams of water contains exactly one mole (6.022 × 10²³ molecules) of H₂O.

How to Calculate Molar Mass

1. Write the chemical formula (e.g., NaCl, C₆H₁₂O₆). 2. Identify each element and its count. 3. Multiply each element's atomic mass by its subscript. 4. Sum all values.

Example for glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆): C: 6 × 12.011 = 72.066; H: 12 × 1.008 = 12.096; O: 6 × 15.999 = 95.994. Total = 180.156 g/mol.

Molar Mass in Chemical Calculations

Molar mass is essential for stoichiometry — converting between grams and moles in reactions. Formula: Moles = Mass (g) ÷ Molar mass (g/mol).

If you have 36.03 g of water, that's 36.03 ÷ 18.015 = 2.00 moles. This is the foundation of quantitative chemistry, used in labs worldwide for solution preparation, reaction yield calculations, and titrations.
