How to Calculate Square Footage

Square footage is the area of a rectangular space measured in square feet. To calculate it, multiply the length by the width: Area = Length × Width. For example, a room that is 12 ft long and 10 ft wide has an area of 120 square feet.

This calculator lets you enter up to three rooms and sums the total square footage automatically. It also converts the result to square meters (1 sq ft = 0.0929 m²).

Common Applications

Non-Rectangular Spaces

For L-shaped rooms, divide the room into two rectangles, calculate each separately, and add them together. The same approach works for T-shaped or other irregular rooms.

For triangular areas, use the formula: Area = (Base × Height) / 2. For circular spaces: Area = π × radius². For more complex shapes, consider using a specialized area calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert square feet to square meters?

Multiply square feet by 0.0929 to get square meters. For example, 1,000 sq ft × 0.0929 = 92.9 m². Conversely, multiply square meters by 10.764 to get square feet.

How much extra material should I buy for flooring?

Add 10% for standard rooms, 15% for diagonal installations, and 15–20% for irregularly shaped rooms. This accounts for cuts, waste, and future repairs.

How many square feet is a standard room?

A typical bedroom is 120–200 sq ft (11–19 m²), a living room 250–400 sq ft, and a standard 1,500 sq ft house has around 5–6 average-sized rooms.
