How Data Transfer Time Is Calculated
The formula is: Time (seconds) = File Size (bits) ÷ Speed (bits per second). Note that file sizes are measured in bytes (1 byte = 8 bits), while network speeds are measured in bits per second (bps). This calculator handles all unit conversions automatically.

Why is 1 GB not 1,000 MB?
In computing, 1 GB = 1,024 MB (binary). However, hard drive manufacturers use 1 GB = 1,000 MB (decimal). Our calculator uses the binary standard (1 GB = 1,024 MB = 8,192 megabits).
