How Pregnancy Weeks Are Counted

Pregnancy is conventionally counted from the first day of your Last Menstrual Period (LMP), even though conception typically occurs about two weeks later. This means a full-term pregnancy lasts approximately 40 weeks from LMP.

Weeks 1–2 are technically before conception, but are included in the standard count. Most pregnancies last between 38 and 42 weeks from LMP, with 40 weeks being the standard due date.

Pregnancy Trimesters

• First Trimester (Weeks 1–13): Major organ development occurs; morning sickness is common
• Second Trimester (Weeks 14–27): Often the most comfortable period; fetal movement becomes noticeable around week 20
