How to Calculate Fence Materials

A fence project needs three main components: posts (structural), rails (horizontal supports), and pickets or panels (vertical boards). For a standard 8-foot post spacing with 3 rails:

Posts: Perimeter ÷ post spacing + 1 (for closure). Rails: (Perimeter ÷ 8) × number of rails (round up). Pickets: (Perimeter × 12) ÷ picket width in inches.

Common Fence Styles and Material Requirements

Privacy fence (6 ft): 3 rails, 3.5-inch pickets. 200 linear ft needs ~27 posts, 75 rail boards, ~686 pickets. Split rail (2 rail): 200 ft needs ~27 posts, 50 rails. Board-on-board: Double pickets, add 25% more. Picket fence (4 ft): 2 rails, 2.5-inch pickets.

Post Hole and Concrete Requirements

Fence posts need to be set at least 1/3 their height in the ground (deeper in frost zones). For an 8-ft privacy fence: 6-ft post with 2-ft burial depth. Post holes: 10-12 inches diameter × depth.

Concrete per hole: approximately 1/3 to 1/2 bag (50 lb) per post hole, depending on soil. For 27 posts: 10–15 bags. Use quick-set concrete for DIY projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many posts do I need for 200 linear feet of fence?

With 8-foot post spacing: 200 ÷ 8 = 25 sections + 1 end post = 26 posts. For corners and gates, add extra posts. Round up to 28–30 posts to account for corners.

How deep should fence posts be set?

Set posts at 1/3 to 1/2 their total length. For a 6-foot fence, use 8-foot posts set 2 feet deep. In frost areas, posts should go below the frost line (24–48 inches in northern states).

How do I calculate the perimeter of my yard?

Measure all four sides of your property and add them together. For a 50 × 80 ft lot: perimeter = (50 + 80) × 2 = 260 linear feet. Subtract any gates (typically 4–12 ft per gate).
