How Blood Alcohol Content is Calculated
Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) measures the percentage of alcohol in your bloodstream. The Widmark formula estimates BAC: BAC = (grams of alcohol / (body weight × distribution ratio)) − (metabolism rate × hours).
The distribution ratio (r) is 0.68 for males and 0.55 for females, reflecting differences in body water content. Alcohol is metabolized at roughly 0.015% BAC per hour on average.
This calculator provides an estimate only. Actual BAC varies with food intake, hydration, medications, and individual metabolism.
BAC Levels and Their Effects
- 0.00–0.02%: No noticeable effects for most people
- 0.02–0.05%: Mild relaxation and slight impairment of judgment
- 0.05–0.08%: Noticeable impairment in coordination and reaction time
- 0.08%+: Over the legal limit in most countries — never drive
- 0.15%+: Severe impairment, risk of vomiting and blackout
- 0.30%+: Potentially life-threatening, loss of consciousness
Factors That Affect BAC
Several factors influence how your body processes alcohol:
- Body weight: Heavier individuals generally have a lower BAC per drink
- Food intake: Eating before or during drinking slows alcohol absorption
- Hydration status: Dehydration can intensify alcohol's effects
- Medications: Many drugs interact dangerously with alcohol
- Biological sex: Women typically reach higher BAC than men of the same weight due to lower body water content
Frequently Asked Questions
How long until BAC reaches zero?
BAC drops at approximately 0.015% per hour. A BAC of 0.08% would take about 5–6 hours to clear. Coffee, water, or food do not speed up this process — only time does.
What counts as one standard drink?
One standard drink contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol: 12 oz of regular beer (5% ABV), 5 oz of wine (12% ABV), or 1.5 oz of distilled spirits (40% ABV).
Is this calculator accurate enough to determine if I can drive?
No BAC calculator should be used to decide whether to drive. Individual metabolism, tolerance, and other factors mean actual BAC can differ significantly from estimates. If you have consumed alcohol, the safest choice is not to drive.
Tahap BAC dan Kesannya
Kesan kepekatan alkohol dalam darah.
| BAC (g/dL) | Tahap | Kesan Tipikal |
|---|---|---|
| 0.01–0.05 | Subclinical | Normal behavior; slight warmth; relaxation |
| 0.06–0.10 | Impairment begins | Mild euphoria; lowered inhibitions; slower reaction time |
| 0.11–0.15 | Clear impairment | Impaired coordination; slurred speech; legal DUI in most countries |
| 0.16–0.20 | Serious impairment | Poor balance; nausea; serious motor impairment |
| 0.21–0.29 | Severe impairment | Significant coordination loss; blackout possible |
| 0.30–0.39 | Danger zone | Loss of consciousness; breathing depression; life-threatening |
| 0.40+ | Potentially fatal | Coma; respiratory failure; death possible |
