Watts to Amps Formula

The relationship between power (W), voltage (V), and current (A) is: A = W ÷ V. This comes from Ohm's Law: P = V × I.

Common examples at 120 V (US):

US vs European Voltage

The US/Canada uses 120 V (60 Hz); Europe, Australia, and most of the world use 230 V (50 Hz). The same 1000 W appliance draws 8.33 A at 120 V but only 4.35 A at 230 V. Always specify voltage when calculating amps.

Circuit Breaker Sizing

To avoid tripping a circuit breaker, keep total load below 80% of rated capacity. A 15 A breaker (120 V) can safely handle 1440 W continuous. A 20 A breaker handles 1920 W. For 240 V circuits, a 20 A breaker handles up to 3840 W.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert watts to amps?

Divide watts by voltage: A = W ÷ V. Example: 1500 W ÷ 120 V = 12.5 A.

How many amps is 2000 watts at 240 volts?

2000 ÷ 240 = 8.33 amps.

What is the formula for watts, amps and volts?

P = V × I, where P = watts, V = volts, I = amps. Rearranged: I = P/V and V = P/I.
