How to Calculate Square Footage

Square footage is the area of a rectangular space measured in square feet. To calculate it, multiply the length by the width: Area = Length × Width. For example, a room that is 12 ft long and 10 ft wide has an area of 120 square feet.

This calculator lets you enter up to three rooms and sums the total square footage automatically. It also converts the result to square meters (1 sq ft = 0.0929 m²).

Common Applications

• Flooring: Calculate how much hardwood, tile, or carpet to buy. Add 10% extra for waste and cuts.
• Painting: Estimate paint needed. One gallon typically covers 350–400 sq ft.
• Real estate: Understand the livable area of a home or apartment.
• HVAC: Size an air conditioner or heater for your space (typically 20–25 BTU per sq ft).
• Landscaping: Calculate sod, mulch, or fertilizer quantities.

Non-Rectangular Spaces

For L-shaped rooms, divide the room into two rectangles, calculate each separately, and add them together. The same approach works for T-shaped or other irregular rooms.

For triangular areas, use the formula: Area = (Base × Height) / 2. For circular spaces: Area = π × radius². For more complex shapes, consider using a specialized area calculator.
