How Ovulation Works

Ovulation occurs when a mature egg is released from the ovary, typically once per menstrual cycle. In a standard 28-day cycle, ovulation usually happens around day 14 (counting from the first day of your period). The egg survives 12–24 hours after release.

The fertile window spans about 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself. Sperm can survive up to 5 days in the reproductive tract, which is why intercourse before ovulation can still result in pregnancy.

Predicting Your Fertile Window

Ovulation timing varies with cycle length. The key insight: ovulation typically occurs 14 days before your next period (the luteal phase is relatively constant). So for a 30-day cycle, ovulation is around day 16; for a 26-day cycle, around day 12.

Additional tracking methods: Basal body temperature (BBT): rises 0.2–0.5°C after ovulation. Cervical mucus: becomes clear, stretchy, and egg-white-like near ovulation. OPK (ovulation predictor kit): detects the LH surge 24–36 hours before ovulation.

Factors That Affect Ovulation

Cycle regularity varies. Stress, illness, travel, weight changes, and exercise intensity can all shift ovulation timing. Conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) can cause irregular or absent ovulation. Some medications (especially hormonal contraceptives) suppress ovulation entirely.
