What Is an Alcohol Unit?
One UK alcohol unit contains 10ml (8g) of pure ethanol. The formula is simple: units = (volume ml × ABV%) ÷ 1000.
Common drinks and their unit content:
- Pint of beer (568ml, 4% ABV): 2.3 units
- Small glass of wine (125ml, 12%): 1.5 units
- Single spirit measure (25ml, 40%): 1.0 unit
- Bottle of wine (750ml, 12%): 9.0 units
- Can of cider (500ml, 5%): 2.5 units
Weekly Alcohol Guidelines
UK Chief Medical Officers recommend no more than 14 units per week for both men and women. Other country guidelines vary:
- UK: ≤14 units/week (spread over 3+ days)
- US: ≤7 drinks/week for women, ≤14 for men (1 drink = ~1.4 UK units)
- Australia: ≤10 standard drinks/week, ≤4 per day
There is no completely 'safe' level of alcohol. Risk increases progressively with consumption. Even moderate drinking is linked to increased cancer risk.
Health Effects of Alcohol
Alcohol affects virtually every organ system:
- Short-term: Impaired judgment, coordination, reaction time
- Regular moderate drinking: Increased cancer risk (even 1–2 drinks/day), liver inflammation, disrupted sleep
- Heavy drinking: Liver disease, heart disease, addiction, mental health problems
Contrary to older research, current evidence suggests there is no protective cardiovascular effect from moderate alcohol consumption — earlier studies had methodological flaws.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many units are in a bottle of wine?
A standard 750ml bottle of wine at 12% ABV contains 9 units. At 14% ABV (common in modern wines), it contains 10.5 units — 75% of the weekly recommended limit in one bottle.
Is 14 units a week really safe?
The 14-unit guideline represents a 'low risk' level, not a 'no risk' level. Any amount of alcohol carries some health risk. The guidelines help people make informed choices while acknowledging that most people choose to drink.
Does one alcohol unit equal one drink?
Not always — this depends on where you live. In the UK, one unit = 10ml ethanol. In the US, one 'standard drink' = 14g ethanol ≈ 1.4 UK units. In Australia, one standard drink = 10g ethanol ≈ 1 UK unit. Always check local definitions.
