How Pet Aging Works

Different animals age at very different rates. A 1-year-old cat is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human. Small dogs live longer than large dogs — a 5-year-old Chihuahua is about 36 human years, while a 5-year-old Great Dane is closer to 45.

Rabbits age at about 8× the human rate, and hamsters reach old age in just 2–3 years.

Life Stages by Pet Type

Cats: Senior at 10+ years (~60 human equiv). Small dogs: Senior at 10–12 years. Large dogs: Senior at 7–8 years. Rabbits: Senior at 5–6 years. Guinea pigs: Lifespan 4–8 years. Hamsters: Full lifespan 2–3 years = 26–39 human years.

Using Pet Age for Healthcare Decisions

Understanding your pet's human-equivalent age helps you make better healthcare choices. Senior pets need more frequent vet visits (twice yearly), dental care, joint supplements, and adjusted nutrition.

A 12-year-old cat is equivalent to a 65-year-old human — just as older humans need more preventive care, senior pets benefit from bloodwork panels and kidney function tests.
