How to Calculate Gravel Volume and Weight

Gravel calculations require two steps: volume, then weight. Volume (cubic yards) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft) ÷ 27. To convert depth from inches to feet: divide by 12.

Example: 20 ft × 10 ft × 4 inches = 20 × 10 × 0.333 = 66.6 cubic feet = 2.47 cubic yards. At 1.4 tons/yd³ for gravel: 2.47 × 1.4 = 3.46 tons.

Common Gravel Applications and Depths

Driveway top layer: 2–3 inches (maintenance). New driveway: 4–6 inches (base layer). Walkway: 2–3 inches. Drainage: 6–12 inches. Landscaping/mulch substitute: 2–3 inches. Under slab: 4–6 inches.

For driveways, use a three-layer system: 6 inches crushed stone base, 4 inches crusher run middle, 2–3 inches pea gravel top.

Gravel Types and Their Uses

Pea gravel (3/8"): Decorative, pathways, between stepping stones. Crushed stone (#57): Driveways, drainage, base layer. Decomposed granite: Pathways, patios. River rock: Drainage, water features, landscaping. Crusher run: Compacted base for driveways and slabs.

Bulk delivery is available for orders over 1–2 tons; smaller quantities can be purchased in bags at home improvement stores.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cubic yards of gravel do I need for a 10x20 driveway?

For a 10×20 ft driveway at 4 inches deep: Volume = (10 × 20 × 0.333) ÷ 27 = 2.47 cubic yards. Add 10% extra = 2.7 cubic yards. That's about 3.8 tons of gravel.

How many bags of gravel equal a cubic yard?

A standard 50 lb bag of gravel covers about 0.5 cubic feet. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, so you'd need 54 bags. Buying in bulk (by the ton) is much more economical for larger projects.

What depth of gravel is needed for a driveway?

A functional gravel driveway needs at least 4 inches of gravel. For heavy vehicle use, 6 inches of compacted base plus 2–3 inches of top gravel is recommended. Ensure proper drainage with a crown or slope.
