How to Calculate a Dog Age in Human Years
The old "multiply by 7" rule is a myth. Dogs mature much faster than humans in their early years and then age more slowly. A 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human; by age 2, they reach early adulthood (~24 human years).
Research from UC San Diego (2020) developed a formula based on DNA methylation changes: Human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. This produces more biologically accurate results but varies significantly by breed size.
How Breed Size Affects Dog Aging
Small breeds (under 10 kg) tend to live 12–16 years; large breeds (over 40 kg) often live only 8–10 years. Giant breeds like Great Danes may age even faster.
A 5-year-old Chihuahua is roughly equivalent to a 36-year-old human; a 5-year-old Great Dane is closer to a 45-year-old. Larger dogs age faster because their bodies work harder — accelerated cell turnover and organ stress.
Dog Life Stages by Human Equivalent
Puppy (0–1 year): infant to teenager
Junior (1–2 years): young adult
Adult (3–6 years): 28–45 human years
Mature (7–9 years): 50–65 human years
Senior (10+ years): 65+ human years
Knowing your dog's human-equivalent age helps you understand their health needs — senior dogs need more frequent vet checkups, joint support, and adjusted nutrition.
💡 Visste du?
- The "1 dog year = 7 human years" rule is a myth. A 2019 UC San Diego study mapped dog aging to human aging using DNA methylation — a 1-year-old dog is biologically closer to a 30-year-old human.
- Dogs were the first domesticated animals — DNA evidence dates dog domestication to roughly 15,000 years ago from grey wolves.
- The oldest dog ever recorded was Bobi, a Portuguese Rafeiro do Alentejo who lived to 31 years 165 days (verified 2023), surpassing the previous record of Bluey at 29 years 5 months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 1 dog year really equal to 7 human years?
No — this is a popular myth. Dogs age rapidly in their first two years (reaching adulthood) and then more slowly. The accurate equivalent varies by breed size and the dog's current age.
When is a dog considered senior?
Small breeds: around 10–11 years. Medium breeds: around 8–9 years. Large/giant breeds: around 6–7 years. Larger breeds are considered senior sooner because they have shorter lifespans.
Do mixed-breed dogs age differently?
Mixed breeds often benefit from hybrid vigor and may live longer than purebreds of equivalent size. For estimation, use the weight-based formula with the dog's actual size.
