The dilution equation C₁V₁ = C₂V₂ states that the amount of solute is conserved when a solution is diluted. C₁ = initial concentration, V₁ = initial volume, C₂ = final concentration, V₂ = final volume.

To dilute a 10 M stock solution to 2 M in 50 mL: V₁ = (2 × 50) ÷ 10 = 10 mL. Take 10 mL of the 10 M solution and add 40 mL of solvent to get 50 mL of 2 M solution.
